Winter 2013

Here in my part of New England, winter 2013 isn't yet sure of itself. First a grey, rainy December, with only a very few outdoor rides, then a good snowfall, some nice crosscountry skiing, then rain, ice, fog,  grey grey grey, rain, fog, fog, finally a bit more snow.

Happily today brought more skiing. Friends Michele, Will and I skied Notchview, a Trustees of Reservations property not far away. It was cold (17F) and the sharp wind was biting, but once into the woods the wind wasn't noticeable. We were well bundled up and the sun was out. Beautiful!

Two hours passed with decent, not great skiing, lacking super snow.  Here and there the trails were icy, with patches of ground showing through. Our hills could use another good snowstorm, say 12 or 18 inches.

The camera battery died so there are only these few photos.

But yes, this is a cycle blog. The only cycling in my world has been on a trainer indoors, totally without interest for posts. So, from time to time I'll put up winter photos, waiting to get back on the roads. Crosscountry skiing is the next best thing to do.

  1. At West Point, we used to call this time of year, "Gloom Period." The holidays are over, spring is still a ways off, and the skies are gray every day. Way to make the most of a bad situation.

Come to think of it, maybe this would make a good blog post! :)

    1. You're totally right ... when it is day after day of grey weather, it is gloom gloom gloom. I'd never manage in the Pacific Northwest. We usually have more snow and perhaps more blue skies than at West Point ... further north, higher and away from the Hudson. Recent years, not so much, though.

  2. Lovely pics. We've had snow too, but most has been turned to brown mush with salt and cars. Bleugh.
Did manage a lovely weekend up in the Lake District tho and had Grizedale Forest almost to ourselves, but the cycling was challenging!

Your photos are drop dead gorgeous. Not to mention the cycling looks s.o. h.a.r.d..... Frozen, rocky trails with loaded bikes. Ouch!

Snow on mountains and sailboats on lakes, I think that is what I am seeing? Wild!!
