Luz-Saint-Sauveur

This morning I left Arrens-Marsous and La Condorinette, an absolutely delightful chambres and tables d'hote where I have been for three nights. My hosts, Corinne and Olivier, were the very best, charming, informative and fun. The house was built in the early 17th century, the chimney reads 1623. Corinne grew up in the area, her mother was the last baby born in the house. My room was spotless and comfortable, and the food delicious. Superb!

The short, easy, day's ride took me through St. Savin, with its unusually beautiful church and nearby chapel.

The D921 is a fairly busy road that follows the Gorge de Luz southwards. There were often cyclists along the road. I appreciate these signs on the busier French roads.

As happens so often, the details and patinas catch my attention as I ride.

Views were never lacking

I arrived early in Luz-Saint-Sauveur, located between the roads to Col du Tourmalet and Cirque du Gavarnie, and had time for a walk around the town. Its architecture is a mix of all periods from the 14th century on. The oldest house I saw dates from 1393.

The fortified church was built in the 11th century, the wall added in the 16th century to provide protection to villagers from bandits. The second view of the church is the view from my hotel window.

  1. Oh....getting close to Tourmalet. I like how you so casually mention it. Beautiful photos as ever.

    1. You are a careful reader! Indeed very close.. .The valley must have been enshrouded in fog when you were here?

    2. No, the valley was fine. Just the mountain gave us trouble!
