Mount Greylock

Today I rode my third annual Memorial Day Weekend Mount Greylock climb. That sounds very official, but it isn't an event, just me and my bike. Today was the first day this weekend without torrential downpours. The sun came out finally, and very welcome it was. Towards the top, where the forest opens up, things got a bit windy, gusty enough to blow the trees around and startle me from time to time.

The view west, nearing the summig

Today I rode up the west side: from that direction the road takes about 10 miles, with about 2500 feet of climbing, none of it terribly steep, to reach the top. It was a perfect day for the ride, all the recent rain left us with a clear sky, clean air and high water in the streams. As I neared the summit, I thought at first that there were masses of white wildflowers blooming in the woods on the forest floor, but that wasn't it. I discovered the answer soon enough. There was a surprise for me today on top:

The remnants of yesterdays snow

The kids were having a blast with snowball fights, and the sun was quickly melting the snow off in all open areas.

A few of you have mentioned how quiet this blog has been recently. Though I've been riding a lot, it has mostly been group rides (no time for photos,) training rides (ditto,) or routes you have already seen (no need for photos or description.)

So I've decided not to think about posting until I have something to post. In the meantime, happy pedaling!

  2. I'm envious of your blue skies and sunshine. Grey and wet here this year so far so our cycling hasn't really got going properly :-( but we get out whenever we can.

    1. If there were more of the blue skies and sunshine it might be worth the energy being envious. As it is, the plants don't grow, or get funguses. Bet you recognize that phenom!

  3. I know the feeling. Post when you have something to post. We are still here when it comes in!

    1. Hi Gerry, But you do such a good job of posting and keeping your site "fresh!" You can guess when I'll get back to regular posts, hmm.

BTW, I notice that yours, Steph's and Aaron's photo has been disappeared. I wonder if the imps in the Word Press / Blogger interface are back at work.

  4. It's good to "hear" from you. I look forward to climbing Greylock one day, although not when there's a chance of snowball fights at the summit.

    1. Do come climb Greylock, with or without these snow remnants. They were amusing. Glad you could comment, that's progress, but as I said to Gerry, I wonder where your images went...
