Friday, photos

One reason, only, requires this post.  The Berkshire Cyclosportif is Sunday, May 6th, it's the first ever, and I am supposed to be tapering my training. I am not supposed to be stopping the training, which is pretty close to what has happened. At least, that's what it feels like. With the best of intentions, I loaded up the car with my bike, Papillon, water bottle, etc., intending to ride in the (warmer) Connecticut River Valley after finishing my morning errands. That is not the reason for this post.

The wind was blowing so hard that the road sand left from winter made a loud racket when it hit the car. The flags in yards stood straight out from their poles. Not encouraging.  By the way, I have no idea what the flag is for.

Just why does this temperature feel so much warmer in January than it does in April?  In January, I would have been thrilled, and riding.

This is what the sky looked like.

So, not surprisingly, I chose: indoors, listening to Schubert's 2nd piano trio on the radio, my cat purring alongside and a book in hand instead of threshhold repeats on the bike. It wasn't even close.

The ride/race Sunday next will be whatever it will be. I keep reminding myself that my goal is not competitive, it is to have some bike goals here at home, and moreover, to get stronger on hills, and be able to ride 60 miles with the ease and maybe frequency that I now ride 40 miles.

But, you wonder, the reason for this post? These two photos, something I've never seen before: a tree frog climbing up the outside of our glass door. This little frog is easily climbing straight up the glass door, no problem. I should climb hills half so easily!

A very rare view for me, the underside of a climbing tree frog. Isn't this little frog cute, especially those feet? They have suction pads. In real life, it is about 5/8 inch long, not counting the feet. Wasn't it just worth skimming through the above silliness?

  1. Those frog pics are definitely worth a post. Resting is a kind of tapering - at least to me. Enjoy the ride.

    1. Hi Iron Rider,

Thanks .... Those little frogs, en masse, make a huge racket at night here, they can be heard from over a mile away. Though this one was quiet, perhaps because it was so cold.

I'll think about you and the few other randonneurs I "know" during Sunday's ride and use you as inspiration to keep my cadence up...it would be nice to ride it a bit faster.

      Cheers, and happy spring!

  2. I bet that tree frog looks huge in binoculars! ;)
There's a tree frog endemic to here in the Pine Barrens--to protect it they've closed roads through the woods and stopped developments. How's that for power!

    Have fun on Sunday.

    1. Oh, it does look huge, but I wouldn't want to terrify readers with that image! Lovely thought, frogs getting roads closed, whooopee!

Sunday should be fun, especially if the wind would just slack off some.

  3. Have a nice taper. You've done your work, so follow the program and all will be well!

    1. Hi Gerry,

Thanks! For once in my life I've managed to (pretty much)follow a program, so am trusting to it to take care of Sunday's ride. I have no idea how many people are going to show up, but it should be a hoot, or at least a new experience for me.

      Happy pedalling!

  4. We've got the same weather here. Hardly cycled this month at all :-(
And talking of Berkshire, although a different one, we have a trio of Berkshire pigs now. Arrived today!

    1. Hi Steph,

Hope your 3 new piggies will be perfect for you...I think they are all supposedly smart, and entertaining. They may even give your chickens a run for their money.

Yes, the wind makes me a bit crazy. I would probably be a mess if I lived with the mistral. Yesterday I rode in the wind here again, though, and survived to tell the story. Thanks for your email also!

  5. The flag is a banner for Ohio State University. The black margin on the right proudly displays the years their football team won the national championship. As for the frog, I would suggest its vertical climbing ability might inspire a great nickname for you, but I don't think "Tree Frog" would be very nice!

    1. Hi Steve,

Thanks for the flag info. I have to admit that once you wrote it, I can see the football and dates, but completely missed them before that. Though he didn't go to school there, my father grew up in Ohio, so I suppose I hope this family will have to get a new flag frequently to reflect new wins!
And, as far as my potential nickname ... when I can climb (cycling) walls with the grace,
agility, speed and élan of those tree frogs I will happily shoulder the nickname...but don't hold your breath!
      Happy pedalling, Suze
